ADI DESIGN INDEX: LAFERT AMONG THE BEST OF ITALIAN MANUFACTURING

The style and functionality of Lafert’s new IE3 Premium Motor has awarded it entry the 2017 ADI Design Index. The ADI Design Index is the annual publication of ADI (Italian Industrial Design association), which brings together a selection of the best in Italian design. It includes products or systems of any sector, theoretical-critical research, process or corporate research applied to design. In addition, published products will compete for the prestigious Golden Compass Award.

Lafert previously entered into the ADI world in 2012 with the HPI motor range, which then – says Technical Manager Tiziano Rossi – received a further award in 2014 (as part of the same competition) with the Golden Compass special mention.” This year is the turn of the new IE3 Premium Motor which, with the partnership of the Miquadra Industrial Design firm, has been redesigned to further streamline the mechanical, electrical, dimensional and performance aspects of the motor.

The IE3 Premium asynchronous motor – says Rossi – is the forerunner of a new range of electric motors with extremely high levels of efficiency. The new range meets the demand from users and manufacturers for higher energy-saving levels and also meets with increasingly stringent and binding environmental regulations.”

Moreover, it positions itself on the market as a component designed totally from performance to operation which makes it the driving heart of existing and future Industry 4.0 machines. With the IE3 Premium Motor – says the Technical Manager – design itself becomes a design process capable of involving the various corporate departments. Plus, the innovation of a highly modular assembly system allows its main components to provide more than 200 configurations and an ability to adapt to any kind of need, thereby offering a custom-made product.”

Studying the full symmetric design of the body (Full Symmetric Body – FSB) enabled us to perform a rotation around the longitudinal and vertical axis and provide the widest range of assembly positions for the terminal box. Plus, a square shape fits perfectly with the general concept.

With a new design of the feet and staggered supports for the screws fastening the end-shields to the stator body, an improved access to the flange fastening screws is provided (Easy Mounting System – EMS). This is now completely unrestricted whilst maintaining the extensive versatility in the positioning of the terminal box. It was essential that the terminal box remained rotatable by 90 degree steps on all four aspects and provide easy access to the cable entries.

Finally, the innovative design of the fan cover is an element that improves the system and gives it a final aesthetic touch. Its structure takes into account the operating requirements associated with the air flow, whilst highlighting the key features of the object. The crucial feature lies in the 4 grooves that connect the cooling vents to the coupling points on the stator body, which adds to its distinctive design.
